Ethiopia now boasts over 540,000 reported agents, processing ETB 889 billion in transaction value and 125 million transactions. Although the agent network has expanded significantly, most agents remain inactive. Many process only a handful of transactions each day, making it difficult to sustain operations and cover costs. Our survey shows Telebirr leading the agent network, urban areas dominating activity while rural access remains vital, and core services centered on cash handling, money transfers, and bill payments.
