Artificial intelligence (AI) holds strong potential to boost economic growth and tackle key development issues in Ethiopia. Although AI adoption is still in its early stages, the government is actively laying the foundation through strategies like the National AI Strategy and data protection laws. The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute (EAII) leads AI efforts, but the ecosystem remains largely government-driven, with limited private sector involvement and investment. Key challenges include poor infrastructure, limited access to local data, a shortage of skilled professionals, and high costs. Nonetheless, recent telecom liberalization, rising digital investments, and government support offer a promising outlook for AI development in Ethiopia.
