The African Union (AU) has formulated a Continental AI Strategy to harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for the continent's development and prosperity. The strategy acknowledges the transformative power of AI in various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, education, and public service delivery. However, it also recognizes the risks associated with AI, such as bias, discrimination, job displacement, and security threats. The strategy proposes a people-centric and inclusive approach, guided by principles such as "Local First," "People-centered," "Human Rights and Human Dignity," and "Ethics and Transparency". Its mission is threefold: to leverage AI for socio-economic transformation and cultural renaissance, mitigate AI risks, and enhance AI capabilities in AU Member States.
